Differentiated management of green spaces at GEVES

GEVES Brion station applies differentiated management of green spaces. Differentiated management is a method of maintaining green spaces that differs from traditional methods in that it favours management methods that are closer to nature and more respectful of the environment.

This approach, which is geared towards sustainable development, takes into account the specific features of each site (grassy strips, lawns around buildings, flowerbeds (see photos) in order to apply a management method to each green space that is better adapted to its situation and its purpose (aesthetics, reception of the public, etc.). In other words, it means maintaining green spaces as much as necessary but as little as possible.

In differentiated management, we choose areas where we favour biodiversity, for example by cutting grass only once a year at the end of autumn, as in the case of grassy strips along a watercourse.

The photos show differentiated management concerning the grassy strips located on both sides of a collecting ditch which crosses across the centre of the experimental station, the main ecological corridor. The edges of the cereal plots are maintained by mowing the width of the shredder in order to avoid pollution by weeds.   The rest is left untouched in order to encourage biodiversity, particularly the presence of auxiliaries and pollinators.
